The Power of The Ocean

As an artist, I am drawn to the endless challenge and beauty of our unique Australian coastal art scene. From the rugged, windswept cliffs of the Great Ocean Road to the pristine, turquoise waters of the north, our coastline is a story of dramatic contrasts.

Finding Your Flow: Leadership Lessons from the Edge of the Ocean

There's a moment, when you stand at the edge of the ocean, where the world seems to fall away. It’s the feeling of the cool, wet sand beneath your feet, the rhythmic crash and sigh of the waves, and the vast, unbroken horizon stretching out before you. In that moment, there is both an immense, humbling power and a deep, profound sense of peace.

The ocean is the ultimate teacher in duality. It can be a place of tranquil reflection and a force of terrifying, untameable energy, often on the same day.

As an entrepreneur, I have always felt a deep connection to this duality. The journey of building a business is much the same. There are days of calm, steady progress, where everything feels like it’s in a perfect state of flow. And then there are the days of storms—the market shifts, the unexpected crises, the powerful undertows that threaten to pull you under.

For years, my instinct was to try and control it all. To build walls, to fight the tide, to force my will upon the chaos. But the ocean teaches you a different lesson. It teaches you that some forces are too great to be controlled. The only way to navigate them is to respect their power, understand their rhythms, and learn how to find your flow within them. My work as an Australian artist painting the coast is my way of exploring this powerful life lesson, one brushstroke at a time.

The Artist's Perspective: The Challenge of Painting Movement

As an artist, I am drawn to the endless challenge and beauty of our unique Australian coastal art scene. From the rugged, windswept cliffs of the Great Ocean Road to the pristine, turquoise waters of the north, our coastline is a story of dramatic contrasts.

Painting the ocean is an exercise in surrender. Unlike a landscape or a still life, it never stays the same for more than a second. It is a moving, breathing entity. An ocean painting is not about capturing a static image; it's about capturing a single moment of dynamic, beautiful energy.

My process often begins not with a sketch, but with a feeling. Is this a painting about the calm serenity of the shallows, or the raw, chaotic power of a storm-tossed wave? I build up my canvases in layers, trying to create a sense of depth and translucency. I focus on the way light dances on the surface, the dark, mysterious colours of the water beneath, and the explosive energy of the white foam as a wave breaks.

It's a constant battle between control and letting go. You can guide the paint, but you must also allow it to move and blend in surprising ways, just as the water itself does. For me, creating Naomi Simson art is about embracing this process. It’s a reminder that the most beautiful outcomes often happen when you allow for a little bit of beautiful, uncontrollable chaos.

The Lesson in Colour: The Powerful Psychology of Blue

Blue is the signature colour of the ocean, but it is a universe of emotion and meaning in itself. The psychology of blue is one of the most powerful tools we have, both in art and in business, to influence mood and convey a message without saying a word. When I work on a coastal piece, I am deliberately using these shades to tell a story.

  • Turquoise & Aqua – The Colour of Clarity: Think of the shallow, sunlit waters of a calm bay. This is the realm of turquoise and aqua. These colours are associated with clarity, communication, and refreshing energy. In business, this is the colour of a new idea, a brainstorming session, a transparent and honest conversation. It’s the colour of seeing the path forward, clear and unobstructed.
  • Deep Navy & Indigo – The Colour of Trust: As the water deepens, the colour shifts to a rich, powerful navy or indigo. This is the colour of the vast, open ocean. It represents trust, stability, depth, and wisdom. For a brand, this is the colour of authority and reliability. It’s the colour that says, "We have been here a long time, we are stable, and you can trust us to navigate the deep waters."
  • The White of the Foam – The Colour of Action: Where the water crashes against the shore, we see the brilliant, energetic white of the sea foam. This isn't a passive colour; it's the colour of action, energy, and release. In a business context, it’s the spark of a product launch, the energy of a busy sales team, the decisive moment of action after a period of calm planning.

A successful business, like a healthy ocean, needs all of these elements: the clarity of new ideas, the deep foundation of trust, and the energy to take decisive action.

The Wellbeing Connection: Finding Your Creative Flow State

In our busy lives, our minds are often like a choppy, stormy sea, with a dozen different currents of thought pulling us in different directions. Finding a way to calm these waters is essential for our wellbeing and our creativity. The coast is the ultimate antidote to a cluttered mind.

Science has shown that the rhythmic sound of waves can be incredibly meditative, promoting what’s known as a creative flow state. This is that magical state of being where you are fully immersed in an activity, your focus is energised, and you lose your sense of time. It's where your best, most innovative work happens.

Spending time by the ocean is a powerful form of downtime for entrepreneurs. It’s an active meditation that engages all the senses:

  • The Sound: The constant, gentle roar of the waves acts as a form of natural white noise, blocking out mental chatter.
  • The Sight: The vast, uncluttered horizon gives your eyes and your mind a sense of space and perspective, making your own problems feel smaller and more manageable.
  • The Feeling: The sensation of the sea breeze, the salt on your skin, the feeling of your feet in the sand—all of these ground you in the present moment.

You don't have to live by the sea to access this feeling. It can be a weekend trip, a long walk on a beach during a holiday, or even just listening to a recording of ocean sounds to help you focus at your desk. It’s about finding a hobby and a space that allows your mind to switch off from the tactical and connect with something bigger.

The Power of The Ocean

The Ocean is Your Teacher

The ocean does not ask for our permission. It operates on its own ancient rhythm, a powerful and constant force of nature. It cannot be managed or controlled, only understood and respected.

This is perhaps the most important leadership lesson it has to offer. There are forces in our business and in our lives—market shifts, global events, human emotions—that we simply cannot control. Our energy is not best spent trying to build walls against the tide. It is best spent learning to be agile, to read the currents, and to have the courage to ride the waves of opportunity when they come.

As an Australian artist, I will continue to be a student of the ocean, attempting to capture its endless lessons on my canvas. My hope for you is that you find your own "ocean"—that place or activity that gives you perspective, calms your mind, and helps you find your own powerful, unstoppable flow.
